The World Small Animal Veterinary Association Foundation (WSAVAF) is a not-for-profit organization that aims to secure funding to develop initiatives to educate veterinarians and the public globally about disease prevention and improvement of health in small companion animals, by preventing and controlling zoonotic diseases and strengthening the human-animal bond.
In 2013, the WSAVA Foundation started a new tradition known as the Fun(d) run that will be held every year as part of the WSAVA World Congress. The World Congresses are held in a different city every year and rotate around the world through three different regions, the Americas, Europe and Africa, and Asia and Oceania. The Fun(d) run not only raises money for the Foundation, but promotes the concept of health and fitness for pets and their owners – embracing a ‘One Health’ approach to wellbeing.
The Foundation supports projects around the world, but has a main annual theme that targets a project with a regional focus or, if pertinent, a relevant world problem with more impact for society.
Thanks to our sponsors Zoetis and Hill’s and our runners the first Fun(d) run was held in Auckland, last March and it was a runaway success that exceeded our expectations with more than 250 people signing up for the run/walk (http://galleries.alexwallace.co.nz/wsavafri/). The money raised was dedicated to support Mission Rabies in India http://www.wsava.org/wsava-foundation-supports-mission-rabies. This project, launched by the charity Worldwide Veterinary Services (WVS) with the UK Dogs Trust, aims to make a difference to the lives of people and dogs in a country where a third of all global human cases of rabies occur, and where someone dies of the disease every 30 minutes and over half of these deaths occur in children. http://www.wsavafoundation.org/mission_rabie.php
WSAVA Foundation Fun(d) Run
Get ready to join your colleagues from all around the world for fun fundraiser with a 5km run and a 3km walk in Bangkok. Runners of all (or no) experience are welcome to join. Our thirdFun(d) Run will take place the Sunday, May 17th in Bangkok, Thailand and during the 2015 World Congress and we are expecting more than 300 runners.
Funds will go towards the AFSCAN Project (African Small Companion Animal Network) to support the veterinary profession and communities in Africa and especially to fight against Rabies in this region. The overall aim of the AFSCAN project is to develop a networked community of individuals and institutions involved in small companion animal work on the African continent. We hope to improve the lives of humans, dogs and cats in the world’s hotspot for zoonotic diseases, like rabies and other illness that affect mostly children, as well as educating people about public health issues related to small companion animals.
One part of our dream is that in the future we can create a Global Run Day for people to run with their dogs to raise awareness of the significance of the role of small companion animals in human society and the wide ranging benefits to human health from association with pets. These include improved childhood development, care of the sick and elderly, as aids for disabled people, as working animals in the case of disasters, to improving the lives, skills and reinsertion into the society of institutionalized populations. We hope to use our passion for running to create social changes in those parts of the world where animal welfare lags behind that in more developed countries.
All entrants are asked to make a donation to the WSAVA Foundation (U$S 10 minimum). In return you will receive a commemorative t-shirt, water bottle and tasty breakfast package to enjoy at the finish line. Funds from our first Fun(d) run were donated to the Mission Rabies project in India, you can find the follow up information athttp://www.wsavafoundation.org/mission_rabie.php
The funds collected at Cape Town will be dedicated to the eradication of rabies in Africa under the scope of the AFSCAN project. We are indebted to our kind sponsors Hill’s Pet Nutrition and Zoetis for helping us organize this event. Please sign up and help WSAVA Foundation’s major project in Africa the AFSCAN Project to make a start.
